sphericalPlot is responsible for visualizing spherical data
One per axes, stored in its appdata. It owns everything around the data - the projection, the outer boundary, the grid, the tick and Miller labels and the X / Y / Z annotation of the reference frame - so that a second plot into the same axes reuses them instead of drawing them again.
Note that plot(...,'3d') builds no sphericalPlot at all; annotateFrame is the seam the two paths share.
