Workshop on Quantitative Microstructure Analysis

Two weeks at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany: lectures and exercises in the first, your own data in the second. On site or online, and one week is possible too.

Dates, fees and registration will be announced here. The 2027 workshop follows the format of the 2026 workshop.

New in 2027

AI-assisted analysisLet an AI assistant draft an MTEX script from a plain description, then check every line of it against the data. You learn what to ask for and how to verify the answer.
MTEX for PythonEvery exercise in MATLAB and in Python, with the same commands. The Python version needs no MATLAB licence.
Week 1

Learning quantitative microstructure analysis

Daily lectures on EBSD, crystallography, texture and their link to plastic deformation and physical properties, each followed by hands-on exercises in MTEX.

  • import, clean and segment EBSD data
  • misorientations and grain boundary networks
  • tensor properties: stress, strain, elasticity
  • parent grain reconstruction and phase transformations
  • statistics and visualisation
Week 2

Applications: bring your own data

Researchers, PhD students and industry users present case studies and workflows. Invited experts introduce new analysis methods, followed by questions and breakout sessions on the participants' own data, from metallurgy, geology, semiconductors and beyond.

  • 20-minute talks with 10 minutes of discussion
  • keynotes by invited experts, to be announced
  • an excursion into the Freiberg silver mine
